Hello. My name is Niel and I am a firefighter at Newcastle fire station. Let me tell you a little about my job.

As you can imagine, we have a lot of responsibilities.  We have to rescue people and animals from a fire or an accident and give them first aid before the ambulances arrive. We have to react immediately. So that means our equipment has to be ready and we have to be fit.

Good personal qualities are important. You have to be calm and level- headed and there are a number of professional skills you need too.

You have to be able to work in a team and be good at problem solving for example. You don't have to have any specific qualifications to be a firefighter.

When you start, your salary is just over 1700 pounds a month for a working week of 37 and a half hours
